POV: It's eleven at night

You're lying down with your phone held up at arm's length, and about twenty minutes in, your elbow starts to complain. So you switch hands. Then you prop it on your chest and lose the angle. Then you give up and put it face-down on the duvet.

Everyone does this. Nobody has really solved it, because the answer was never a better grip or a stronger arm. The answer is that the screen should be sitting somewhere else entirely.

  • 1. Lift the panel

It hinges up from flat. No tools, no assembly, nothing to click into place.

  • 2. Drop your phone in

Any modern smartphone, case on or off, portrait or landscape. The anti-slip base holds it where you put it.

  • 3. That is the whole setup

Whatever was playing is now ten inches wide, angled wherever you left it, and your hands are free for the first time all evening.

Nothing to charge, nothing to pair

There's no app, no firmware update, and no battery to run flat halfway through something. The Cinema Screen is an optical screen - a shaped acrylic lens in a folding frame, and nothing else.

There is nothing to connect because there is nothing electronic inside it. Which is exactly why it works with every phone, every app and every video, in either orientation, on the first try and on the thousandth.

Most gadgets ask you to set them up. This one asks you to open it.

  • No setup at all

No app, no pairing, no firmware, no battery to run flat. Lift the panel, drop your phone into the base, and it works.

  • Free 2-day US shipping

Shipped free from a warehouse in the United States in two business days. Not three weeks from overseas.

  • Thirty-day returns

If it isn't for you, send it back within thirty days for a full refund. You cover return postage, we cover the rest.

Made to be carried

The lens is optical-grade acrylic - lighter than glass, and it won't shatter in a bag. The frame is PP: light enough to carry without thinking about it, rigid enough that the panel holds its angle instead of drifting while you watch. The base has an anti-slip grip, so your phone stays put when you nudge the table.

Folded, it is 0.39 inches thick and 8.66 by 6.89 inches - roughly the footprint of a paperback, and thinner than most phone cases. It disappears into a tote, a drawer, a carry-on, or the seat pocket in front of you.

  • The nightstand

This is where most of them end up. Propped at the end of the day, angled toward the pillow, so the last hour of your evening doesn't involve holding anything up.

  • The kitchen counter

Something playing while you cook, at a size you can actually follow from over by the sink.

  • The tray table

Folds flat into a bag and sets up on a plane, a train, a hotel desk, or the floor of a tent.

Against a tablet

The honest version. A tablet has the better screen. It also costs about eleven times as much, needs charging, and asks you to sign in to everything all over again.

What it isn't

It isn't a television, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. An optical screen spreads out the picture your phone is already making - it doesn't add resolution. It is sharpest through the middle, softens slightly at the far corners, and looks its best in a dim room in the evening rather than in direct sunlight. That is how every screen of this kind behaves, at any price.

What you get is a much bigger picture with your hands free, for about the price of two cinema tickets. If you want 4K, buy a monitor. If you want to stop holding your phone above your face every night, this is the thing.

Questions

Does it need charging, batteries or an app?

None of the three. There are no electronics in it at all - it is a shaped acrylic lens in a folding frame. Unfold it and it works.

Will it fit my phone?

Yes. The base takes any modern smartphone, with or without a case, and holds it in portrait or landscape. There is no compatibility list because there is no connection to make.

How big is the picture, and where should I sit?

Ten inches measured diagonally. Watch from about arm's length - the distance you would naturally hold a book. That is the sweet spot. It is designed for a nightstand or a desk, not for across a room.

Does it work in a bright room?

It is at its best in softer light - evenings, bedrooms, a plane cabin. In direct sunlight the picture washes out, the same way your phone does. Turning your phone's brightness up makes a real difference in any conditions.

Is it good for reading small text?

It is built for video. Text gets bigger but not sharper, because the lens magnifies the pixels your phone already has. For films, shows and games it is excellent. For small print, your phone's own text-size setting will serve you better.

Is the picture sharp right to the edges?

Sharpest through the middle, with slight softening at the far corners. We would rather tell you now than have you find out.

Glass or plastic?

Optical-grade acrylic, deliberately. It is lighter than glass and it will not shatter if the bag it is in gets dropped.

How do I clean it?

A microfibre cloth - the one that came with your sunglasses is perfect. Acrylic is tougher than glass but it scratches more easily, so avoid paper towel and anything abrasive.

Five ways to get the best picture

  1. Turn your phone's brightness up. The lens spreads the light your phone gives it, so a brighter phone means a brighter picture. This is the single biggest difference between people who love it and people who shrug at it.
  2. Watch from about arm's length. Roughly where you would hold a book. Much further back and the picture starts to lose definition.
  3. Soft light beats bright light. Evenings, a bedside lamp, a plane cabin, a hotel room.
  4. Centre the phone in the base. The middle of the lens is the sharpest part of it, so a centred phone gives you the best picture edge to edge.
  5. Clean it with a microfibre cloth. Paper towel and anything abrasive will scratch the acrylic.
